Duolingo Test Structure – What to Expect

The DET is adaptive – the questions get harder or easier based on your answers. It has 4 main components:



Part 1: Introduction & Setup (5 minutes)

  • Verify your ID
  • Show your room (360° camera scan)
  • Ensure no other people, phones, or notes
  • Rules: No looking away, no typing assistance

Yes. You can take it up to 3 times in a 30-day period. Only your best score matters.

Different, not necessarily easier. DET is shorter and cheaper, but the adaptive format can be stressful. Some find the typing demands challenging.

Yes – unprepared candidates often score 20–30 points lower than their true ability. The question types are unique and require practice.

No. You cannot have any paper, pen, or notes. All note-taking must be mental.
